Moving to San Antonio- What Military Families Need to Know

Permanent change of station orders are a reality that many military families experience.

Once you have received your PCS orders to San Antonio, it’s time to get yourself and your family organized for the relocation process.

Here are some things that you should know about the city which has become the emblem of Texas independence:

San Antonio TX is a livable city with a population of around 1.5 million. The city, with its small-town feel and rich history, is attracting new residents all the time.


Military Relocation to San Antonio


In fact, according to US Census Bureau, San Antonio is the 7th fastest growing city in the country in 2016. It is also the 7th largest city in the US and the 2nd largest city in Texas.

There has been military presence in the area for 300 years, including the current U.S. Department of Defense’s largest medical center.

There’s also a sizable community of locals who are working at at Lackland Air Force Base, Fort Sam Houston, and Randolph Air Force Base.


Schools in San Antonio

There are several private institutions and school districts that offer families options to suit their needs. Northside ISD, one of San Antonio’s premier school districts, offers a Two-Way Dual Language Immersion Program, which promotes bilingual and bicultural education in both English and Spanish.

The three top-rated elementary schools are AUA Elementary School, Blattman Elementary School and Encino Park Elementary School. Health Careers High School, Alamo Heights High School and Travis Early College High School are some of the top-rated high schools.

San Antonio is also home to 29 different universities and colleges, which include the University of Texas at San Antonio and Texas A&M University-San Antonio.

Weather in San Antonio

The weather generally includes hot summers, mild winters, and a wet spring.

The coolest months are December and January, with average temperatures of around 42 degrees Fahrenheit. There are rarely very low temperatures and snowfall hardly ever occurs.

Things to do in San Antonio

If you enjoy the outdoors, San Antonio is perfect for you. The city has some incredible green space like Brackenridge Park, a nearly 350-acre park founded in 1899.

You can also take a stroll at River Walk. Explore the expansive 30-mile river walk and enjoy fine dining, scenic boat rides, and plenty of outdoor activities.

You can also bring your family and your dogs to Eisenhower Park. This family-friendly destination is located north of the city and offers a quiet rural escape.

Transportation in San Antonio

San Antonio has an extensive network of roads. It also has  one of the best maintained and most affordable public transportation systems in the country.

The city is served by a number of Interstate, US and State routes, as well as State Loops that form beltways around the city and provide access to all neighborhoods.

There are also bicycle paths and the city operates a bike-sharing city that’s available to both visitors and residents. There are also two airports here- San Antonio International Airport and Stinson Municipal Airport.


Real estate in San Antonio

The city of San Antonio has a lower cost of living, a higher rate of employment, and a real estate  market that is ideal for first-time homebuyers and retirees. There’s also an array of neighborhoods available for young professionals, families, and empty nesters.

There’s Downtown, with the bustling Business and Historic Civic Districts; King William Historic District with its beautiful old buildings; and upscale Monte Vista and Alamo Heights.

There is also Five Points, which is close to Downtown; Prospect Hill, which is close to Lackland Air Force Base; and Oak Hills, with the Medical Center District and universities nearby.

You can also consider Castle Hill,  a suitable place for families and retirees.  New Braunfels and Helotes are  two nearby suburbs many commuters call home.
